Information for travelling to Guanajuato

Right in the heart of Mexico, in a beautiful mining valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato Mountains, rests Guanajuato- the capital city of the homonymous state.  It is not surprising that Guanajuato was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. Narrow streets paved with stone and an old architecture grant this colonial city an interesting antique look that conquers the heart of its visitors. If you’re interested in history and culture, you should travel to Guanajuato at least once in your life to discover the magic that lies in its narrow alleys and its impressive Baroque buildings.

Having some basic information for travelling to Guanajuato will help you to take the most of your trip and enjoy an unforgettable vacation in this city full of history, culture, and legends.

The first thing to do in Guanajuato is walk its cobblestone streets to admire the old Baroque and Neoclassical buildings of the old Historic Center. The must-see are the Alhóndiga de Granaditas (site of the first victory over the Spaniards in 1810), Juarez Theater (departure spot of the popular “Callejoneadas” and home to the Cervantino International Festival), the Mummies Museum (where more than 100 natural mummies are showcased), San Diego de Alcantara Temple (a fine example of the Mexican Baroque, or Chirrugueresque, architectural style) and the Diego Rivera House Museum (a beautiful 18th Century house where the Mexican painter was born).

Lovers of legends and myths will learn many interesting stories in Guanajuato. At the Guanajuato Legend Museum you can hear fabulous stories that have passed from one generation to the other, like the legend of the General, the Junk Shop, the Snort and the mummies. Let magic carry you away and kiss your mate on the third step of the “Callejón del Beso” (the Alley of the Kiss) to guarantee that your love will last forever.  Make sure to travel the incredible underground tunnels and the Hidalgo Market; visit the silver mines of La Valenciana and Mineral de Rayas; and don’t forget to pay a visit to the nearby cities of Leon and San Miguel de Allende.

If you’re seeking for some adventure, you can go trekking or camping; visit the beautiful Las Palomas Recreational Park; or take a biking tour to the mountains to explore the old haciendas and ghost towns lost amidst the jungle. You can also enjoy a marvelous hang gliding or a balloon ride over the cities and mountains to admire its beauty from above.

In Guanajuato, you must taste the traditional Bajio Cuisine, including its “enchiladas mineras”, the “Guanajuato pacholas”, “chalupas” and “tamales”.  Some traditional beverages to try are the “cebadina”, beetroot juice and strawberry liquor; and the most popular candies include “charamuscas”, “Irapuato strawberries” and “Celaya milk caramel”.

Book your hotel online and spend a different Mexican vacation at the city known as the “Mexican Gateway”. Learn all about its marvelous culture, its history and traditions; travel the mining route; stroll its alleys and admire its old buildings; spend a day in the Union Square and let magic run through your veins. Guanajuato is full of magic… You’ll see.

When should you visit Los Cabos?

Los Cabos is one of those fantastic vacation destinations where you can have a great time all year round. The climate is good almost every day and there are always amazing activities to engage in.
However, you may prefer to travel at one season or another depending on what your favorite attraction is or on the particular activity you are into. So, when should you visit Los Cabos?

The high season in Los Cabos runs from mid-December to Easter Week in April. Generally, hotels are overcrowded at this time of year and prices are at their peak.  This is exactly the time you must be there if what you want is to enjoy the awesome whale-watching tours, hiking or boating; the ocean and sea waters are a bit cold for diving and snorkeling, though. Prices are highest at Christmas and New Years Eve and it’s truly hard to find accommodation by this time, so you should book at least two months in advance to get your room at a better rate. By mid-March students head to Los Cabos to enjoy their Spring Break and by late February and March, a superb carnival takes place in the cities.

If you prefer to avoid the high season, May and June are the perfect months for your visit. At this time, winter crowds have gone home and the stormy season is yet to come. Temperatures are ideal during these months and never surpass the 85°F. If you start your hotel search by late winter, you can get incredible offers online. If you’re interested in fishing, you can enjoy the International Game Fish Association Offshore Championship Tournament by mid May. Also, by the end of June and early July you can witness the 4-day Annual Stars & Stripes Fishing and Golf Tournament.

The low season starts in July and lasts until mid November. From July to September temperatures rise up to 90°F and humidity strikes the area. In September, there may be chances of an occasional tropical storm or a hurricane, so you may be seduced by the summertime discounts, which are truly juicy. By the end of July and beginning of August anglers have the chance to participate in the Bisbee’s East Cape Offhsore held in Buenavista. In August, Los Cabos Summer Dive Fiesta attracts visitors from all over the world to Cabo Pulmo, where celebrations last for a week.

The shoulder season takes place in October and November. These months are also great for traveling to Baja California. Temperatures are not so high and if you book your hotel room in advance you can still get a moderate rate for it. October is a hot month in Los Cabos for anglers. By mid October, they can enjoy the popular Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, and by the end of October they can take part in the Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament-where anglers compete for marlin, dorado and tuna- and the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament- which boasts a huge cash prize for the record marlin. In November you can go for the Tuna Jackpot Tournament, but you’ll surely need to book your package well in advance because the area starts to overcrowd again. The high season’s back!

So, depending on your interest, you can visit Los Cabos at one time of year or another. Nevertheless, as I see it, the best time for being in Los Cabos is every day.
